Volunteer FAQ

Is there an age requirement for volunteering?
We are a ‘kid-friendly’ organization and volunteers as young as 11 can sort and repackage donated grocery items as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult.  Individual volunteers over 16 years of age do not need a chaperone. Volunteers working in the Culinary Center need to be 18 years or older.

How do I get started?
To get started volunteering, click here.

We welcome volunteers who need community service hours for school and organization requirements.

Can I help serve food?
Yes, but you need food handlers training first! You can get your training online or in-person from the Tulsa Health Department here.

Do you accept Court Referred Volunteers?
The Food Bank does accept volunteers needing to fulfill court mandated community service hours, but for misdemeanor charges only.  Volunteers who are completing court appointed community service hours must fill out this form and bring it, and a  photo id to your first shift. You may sign up for your own volunteer hours, but they will not be approved if we do not have your paperwork on file. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Brianna at bcoble@okfoodbank.org or 918-936-4545, with any questions and to submit paperwork.

Can I just show up?
No.  All volunteers must be scheduled in advance.  This helps us know how many volunteers to expect so we can plan accordingly.

What’s the appropriate attire?
Volunteers are encouraged to dress in casual, comfortable clothing.  If you are sorting and repackaging donated grocery items in our Product Recovery Center or working in other areas of our warehouse, no open-toed shoes are allowed.

What should I do in inclement weather?
The Food Bank follows the closing schedule of the Tulsa Public Schools for the 1st and 2nd day of inclement weather.  If in doubt, call the main Food Bank number at 918-585-2800 and listen to the recorded message.

Where do I go when I arrive?
During our regular business hours you may enter the Food Bank through the main double door entry.  Please check in with the receptionist and she will alert the appropriate volunteer staff member that you have arrived. That staff member will come to greet you and escort you to the volunteer area.

If volunteering for an evening or Saturday volunteer shift, you may enter through the single door north of the main entrance. It has a sign on the door that says “Night and Weekend Entrance”.  If no one is at the door letting people in, you may ring the buzzer located to the right of the door.  A ‘Manager on Duty’ will let you in, have you sign in and then escort you to your appropriate work area.

What if I have to cancel?

To cancel an individual reservation, your confirmation email from the online registration will have a link for you to click to cancel.  You may also sign into your account and cancel.

If you must cancel your GROUP volunteer reservation, please email Brianna Coble at bcoble@okfoodbank.org or call 918-936-4545.  Group cancellations need to made at least 24 hours in advance.

Can someone come talk to my group about volunteer opportunities at the Food Bank?
ABSOLUTELY!  If you would like a Food Bank representative to come to your business, civic group, club or organization, school or church, we would love to schedule a time to speak with your group!

Please contact Terresia Kehr, Manager of Volunteer Services at tkehr@okfoodbank.org or (918) 936-4512.
